Toddlers have difficulties in falling sleep at night and there are several reasons for this. This can be another challenge for a mother to get her toddler sleep throughout the night. Passionflower is an herb that can be used to induce sleep among adults as well as toddlers. According to the University of Maryland, the herb contains properties that increases the chemical found in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Scientists are not sure though about the effectiveness of this herb but it is believed that GABA helps calm brain cell activity since it has a calming effect. There are no sufficient studies yet to support the use of passionflower among children so it is essential to ask supervision from your child’s pediatrician when you use this herb to your kids. When making herbal tea, just add 2 g of dried herb to 1 cup of hot water and wait for 10 minutes before straining. Herbal Sleep Aid for Toddlers #2: Chamomile

Chamomile is also recommended to treat insomnia. Generally both species are being used however German chamomile is the one commonly used. This herb contains relaxing and calming properties and it comes in the form of teas, tinctures, extracts and dried flowers. For the use of chamomile for toddlers’ sleep aid, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends 2-4 g of dried chamomile to 1 cup of boiling water. Let the tea stay for 15 minutes before cooling. The University added that children below 5 years old must not take more than ½ cup a day.

Another herbal sleep aid that can be used for toddlers is the Valerian. It is also prepared as a tea or used as an extract to improve quality of sleep. Like any other herbs used to induce sleep, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends talking with your child’s pediatrician prior to taking this herb. Additionally, the university noted that study results regarding the effectiveness of this herb as a sleep aid is still uncertain. In making herbal tea, pour 2-3 g of the dried herb and allow it to stand for 10 minutes.

There are other procedures to get your child into asleep which according to BabyCenter, it is up to you which routine you may choose. One is that you can read a bedtime story to your toddler while in bed, you can take her a bath and put on her pajamas at the same time every night or you can cuddle her for a few minutes before going to bed.
